Lagos is huge, loud and slow to cross. The trips that go wrong are the ones that treat it like a walkable city: an unbooked taxi from the airport, a cross-town run at rush hour that takes three hours, and a phone in hand on Lagos Island. Four clusters, each reached by a pre-arranged car and visited on its own, make a first visit workable. Your government may advise against parts of Nigeria: read its advice and keep to the areas and routes it allows.
