Lagos

Lagos is a car-with-a-driver city: base yourself on Victoria Island or Ikoyi, move between neighbourhoods by pre-arranged car, keep each trip to one cluster, and be back before dark and before the evening traffic.

Lagos is huge, loud and slow to cross. The trips that go wrong are the ones that treat it like a walkable city: an unbooked taxi from the airport, a cross-town run at rush hour that takes three hours, and a phone in hand on Lagos Island. Four clusters, each reached by a pre-arranged car and visited on its own, make a first visit workable. Your government may advise against parts of Nigeria: read its advice and keep to the areas and routes it allows.

LOS to Victoria Island: one pre-booked hotel car with a named driver, 60–150 minutes depending on traffic — the risk is not the distance but an unbooked taxi, and a late-evening jam that turns 30 km into three hours.

Get around

Pre-arranged car or ride-hailing between clusters; walk only inside a hotel or gallery compound in daylight.

Passes
No pass. Agree the day rate with a hotel-arranged driver or use the ride-hailing fare shown in the app.
Late at night
No metro to plan around; the car is the only sensible option, and it runs all night at higher fares.

Language

English runs government, business and the media, so you can organise everything in it. On the street people switch to Pidgin, Yoruba in Lagos and the south-west, Igbo in the south-east and Hausa in the north. Humour, titles and greetings carry a lot of weight.

  • Pidgin: 'How far?' (how are you?), 'Wetin dey happen?' (what's up?), 'Abeg' (please).
  • Use 'Sir' and 'Ma' with anyone older or in authority.

  • Titles: Use Sir, Ma, Chief, Alhaji; avoid: First names with older people
  • Hands: Right hand to give, receive and eat; avoid: The left hand for money or food
  • Dress: Smart clothes for churches, offices and events; modest dress in the north; avoid: Shorts in the north
  • Hospitality: Accept food or drink offered; avoid: Flat refusals
  • Photos: Ask first; avoid: Police, soldiers, airports, government buildings

  • Fake e-visa and landing-card sites: Use evisa.immigration.gov.ng and lecard.immigration.gov.ng only.
  • Airport 'protocol' officers and touts: Only your hotel's named driver; ignore anyone offering to speed up immigration.
  • Card skimming and cloning: Keep the card in sight, use contactless or transfers, turn on alerts.
  • Checkpoint 'fines': Stay polite, ask for a receipt, travel with a local driver who knows the routine.
  • Online romance and business fraud: Never send money or share bank details with new contacts.
  • Black-market FX: Rates can be fair but counterfeit and short-changing happen; count carefully or use a bank.
