Santa Maria sits in the geographic centre of Rio Grande do Sul, ringed by hills, and is a university town of about 285,000 people. It is the practical gateway to Paleorrota, the state's palaeontological route, and its museums hold fossils collected since the early 20th century. Most travellers pass through on BR-287 or BR-158; the city earns one day, not a week.

The centre is walkable; taxis and app rides cover the 2 km from the bus station and the 11 km to the airport. Municipal buses link the centre, the bus station and Camobi. For Paleorrota sites outside the city you need a car or an organised tour.

Safety

Santa Maria is a normal mid-size Brazilian city: use the same care as elsewhere in the state, avoid walking alone at night away from the centre, and drive intercity roads by day.
  • Intercity roads BR-287, BR-392 and BR-158 are single-lane in stretches, some tolled, with speed traps: drive by day.
  • Summer storms arrive fast with heavy rain and lightning; check forecasts before long drives.
  • Museum opening hours are limited and change: confirm before travelling to a specific collection.
  • English is limited outside hotels and universities; a few Portuguese phrases help.
