Birr is a small Georgian market town in County Offaly, built around a zigzag of streets below Birr Castle. The castle demesne holds the Leviathan, a 72-inch reflecting telescope finished in 1845 that stayed the world's largest until 1917, plus gardens, a lake and Ireland's tallest box hedges. The town itself is a two-hour walk: Emmett Square, Oxmantown Mall, John's Hall. Come for the science history and the quiet, not for a nightlife scene.

- Bus times are thin: nine buses a day to Tullamore on weekdays, three on Saturday, four on Sunday — check the operator's timetable before you plan a connection.
- Tullamore is the nearest railway station, about 40 min by road; there is no station in Birr.
- Castle gardens close outside the March–October season; the castle itself is a guided tour only.
- Rural roads are narrow with no hard shoulder; drive on the left and expect tractors.
