Saint Matthews is a small, walkable suburb in metro Louisville, about 8 miles from Louisville International Airport and 10–15 minutes by car from downtown. It is a shopping and dining district rather than a sightseeing destination: Mall St. Matthews, Shelbyville Road Plaza and a cluster of restaurants around the Frankfort Avenue and Breckenridge Lane crossroads. Most travellers use it as a cheaper, quieter place to sleep while visiting Louisville, or stop for a meal and a walk. There is no passenger rail, and the sights are limited, so one night or a half-day is enough.

A car is the practical way to move around: the city sits in the northwest quadrant of the I-64 and I-264 (Watterson Expressway) interchange, with exits at Cannons Lane, Breckenridge Lane and Shelbyville Road. TARC buses run several routes through Saint Matthews and Jefferson County; check current routes and fares on the TARC site. The core is walkable if you stay near the Shelbyville Road and Breckenridge Lane crossroads. There is no passenger rail service to Saint Matthews or Louisville.
