Tallangatta
Give Tallangatta one night as a lake stop on the Murray Valley Highway, or ride the rail trail through without sleeping: two nights only if you are cycling the whole Albury leg.
Tallangatta is a small Victorian town on the Murray Valley Highway, about 40 minutes by car from Albury-Wodonga, sitting where the Mitta Mitta and Murray arms meet Lake Hume. The original town was moved uphill before the Hume Dam filled, and its remains sit under the lake. The draw is the High Country Rail Trail, the lake foreshore and a cheap bed between Albury and the mountains. There is no train and no airport: you arrive by car, coach or bike.

- Oceania ↗Oceania's island states guard their farms and reefs at the border: tick 'yes' on the arrival card for any food, plant, animal product, soil or used outdoor gear, and let the officer decide.
- Oceania ↗Across the tropical South Pacific, cyclones are possible from November to April: choose insurance that covers weather delays and keep one spare night before a long-haul departure.
- Australia and New Zealand ↗Both countries drive on the left, with long distances between fuel stops in the outback and on New Zealand's back roads; fatigue causes more visitor crashes than speed.
- Australia ↗Almost every visitor needs a visa or an electronic authorisation (ETA or eVisitor, depending on passport) before boarding: apply only through the official Department of Home Affairs site or the official AustralianETA app, and check the rules for your passport.
- Australia ↗Declare all food, plant material, seeds, wood and animal products on your arrival declaration; undeclared items can bring on-the-spot fines or visa cancellation. When unsure, declare it.
- Australia ↗Drive on the left. An overseas licence in English (or with an official translation or International Driving Permit) is accepted for visitors; check the state rules and your rental contract.
- Australia ↗Swim between the red and yellow flags on patrolled beaches; rip currents cause most beach drownings.

Getting around
You need a car for anything beyond the town centre. The town itself is walkable in 10 minutes. The High Country Rail Trail runs through town: one way to Old Tallangatta, the other about 40 km of off-road gravel beside Lake Hume to Albury-Wodonga. Weekday buses link the town with Albury-Wodonga; there is no train.

Safety
- No train and no airport: plan around the car or the weekday coach.
- The Wymah ferry across the Murray runs only at certain water levels and times: check before you commit, or the detour is long.
- Kangaroos and wombats on the highway at dawn and dusk.
- Fuel and food options thin out east of town: fill up in Tallangatta or Albury.
