Port Hardy is a working transport hub at the north end of Vancouver Island, not a resort. People come for three reasons: the BC Ferries Inside Passage run to Prince Rupert or Bella Coola, the North Coast Trail and Cape Scott trailheads, and cold-water diving offshore. If none of those apply, one night is enough to see the museum, the seawall and Fort Rupert.

Getting around

The town centre is walkable in 15–20 minutes end to end. BC Transit (Mount Waddington) runs Monday–Saturday to Port McNeill and Coal Harbour; taxis cover the ferry terminal, airport and Telegraph Cove. No rideshare. A car makes Fort Rupert, the salmon centre and the trailheads far easier.

Safety

Port Hardy is a small, quiet town and violent crime is rare; the real risks are weather, wildlife and isolation. Tell someone your trail plan, carry rain gear, and treat the ocean as cold and fast.
  • Bear country: store food properly at campgrounds and on trails, and never leave coolers out.
  • Cell and data coverage thins fast north and west of town.
  • Ferry and bus schedules are seasonal and sparse: book the ferry and confirm the bus the same week.
  • Cold water and strong currents offshore: diving here needs prior cold-water experience.
  • Distances are long: Campbell River is about 2.5–3 hours by road, Victoria about 5.5 hours.
