Turgutreis
Stay 2–3 nights if you want a beach-and-boat resort with easy Bodrum access; skip it if you came for an old harbour town — Turgutreis is modern and traffic-heavy.
Turgutreis is the largest resort on the west coast of the Bodrum peninsula, about 20 km from Bodrum itself, and named after the Ottoman admiral Turgut Reis, who was born in the village then called Karatoprak. It is a modern beach-and-marina town rather than a historic one: sandy coves, boat trips, windsurfing on an exposed coast, and a strip of resorts running south to Akyarlar. Most travellers use it as a quieter, cheaper base for the peninsula, or as a half-day stop between Bodrum and the beaches at Akyarlar.

Getting around
The villages sprawl, so a dolmuş or local bus is needed between them. Bus 2-34 links Bodrum's Yeni Otogar via downtown Bodrum to Turgutreis roughly every 10 minutes, daily 07:00–00:00. Bus 2-32 runs south to Akyarlar about every two hours, daily 07:00–18:00. Bus 2-45 goes north to Gümüşlük hourly, daily 08:00–21:30. Bus 2-37 runs northeast to Gümüşlük, Yalıkavak, Gündoğan and Göltürkbükü every hour or two, daily 07:30–21:30. Outside summer, expect thinner timetables.

Watch out
Safety
- The town beachfront is choked with traffic; cross with care and expect noise.
- Bayrak Tepe viewpoint: the access road is poor, the last stretch is a hike, and a sunset visit means descending in the dark.
- Strobilos (Çıfıt Kalesi) above Aspat Beach has been fenced off at times — check locally before walking up.
- No ferries now run from Turgutreis to Kos, Kalymnos or Leros; go via Bodrum.
- Turgutreis is not a port of entry: boats arriving from Greek waters must clear in at Bodrum first.
