Washington is a small central Illinois city of about 15,000 people, founded in 1825 and sitting just east of Peoria and the Illinois River. It has a compact historic downtown square with around 30 shops, a rail trail, a reservoir with trails, and three golf courses. Almost nobody comes here as a destination: it works as a quiet, cheaper bed for Peoria, or as a half-day stop on a drive along US-24. One night is enough; two if you are using it as a Peoria base.

Getting around

A car is the practical answer: sights are spread along Peoria Street, Washington Road and the reservoir, and there is no useful local transit beyond Peoria's CityLink stopping at Sunnyland Plaza. The Washington Recreational Trail covers about 3–4 miles from N. Cummings Lane to N. Main Street on foot or bike. Parking downtown is free and easy.

Very low street crime for a US small city; the real risks are winter ice on pavements and rural roads, summer heat on exposed trails, and deer on US-24 at dusk. 911 works everywhere.
