Flagstaff is a high-country town at 2,100 m on old Route 66, ringed by ponderosa pine and the San Francisco Peaks. It is the practical base for the Grand Canyon's South Rim (about 1.5 h north) and a stop on the Amtrak Southwest Chief. Summer is mild, winter brings real snow, and the altitude is the thing most visitors underestimate.

Downtown is about five blocks square and walkable. The Mountain Line bus runs fixed routes across town; the Flagstaff Urban Trails System (FUTS) has 80+ km of paved and unpaved paths, including one along Route 66. A car is needed for the Grand Canyon, Snowbowl and most trailheads.
