Midland is a small Georgian Bay town (about 17,000 people) that punches above its size on history: Sainte-Marie among the Hurons, the Martyr's Shrine and the Huronia Museum sit within a few kilometres of each other. It is a summer and shoulder-season stop, best paired with Penetanguishene, Awenda or Wasaga Beach rather than visited on its own for a week.

Getting around

A car is the practical choice: the sights are spread along Highway 12 and the waterfront. Mid-Pen Transit runs local buses in Midland and Penetanguishene; taxis are short-hop and cheap. Cycling works on the flat waterfront but not on the highway shoulders.

Safety

Very safe for a town of its size; the real risks are highway driving, winter ice and cold Georgian Bay water. Lock the car and use normal city sense after the pubs close.
  • Sainte-Marie and the Huronia Museum run seasonal hours: check before you drive out.
  • Highway 12 is a fast two-lane road with no sidewalk between the town and the historic sites.
  • Summer weekends fill every motel in town; book weeks ahead.
  • Winter lake-effect snow and freezing rain close roads quickly.
