Canso
Go for one night in late July for the Stan Rogers Folk Festival, or as a fog-bound harbour stop on the Eastern Shore drive. Skip it as a base.
Canso is a village of about 800 people at the end of a peninsula on Chedabucto Bay, the southeastern terminus of Trunk 16. It is one of the oldest British settlements in Nova Scotia, and today it is a one-street harbour town with a national historic site offshore, a small museum and a folk festival that fills every bed in late July. Two nights is the maximum most travellers need; one is enough outside festival week.

- North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
- North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
- North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
- Canada ↗Visa-exempt travellers flying to or through Canada usually need an eTA; check your passport on the official Government of Canada site (canada.ca) and apply only there.
- Canada ↗A Parks Canada pass is needed to stop in national parks such as Banff and Jasper; some spots (for example Moraine Lake) are reached only by shuttle or tour, so book ahead.
- Canada ↗Keep well away from bears, elk and moose; carry bear spray on Rockies trails and follow trail closures.

Getting around
You need a car. Canso is the end of Trunk 16, about 1 h 45 min from Antigonish and roughly 3 h 30 min from Halifax. There is no local transit and no taxi rank worth relying on; the village itself is small enough to walk once you have parked.

A long drive on a slow coastal road; only worth it if you are heading to Halifax anyway.

Motel and highway-side rooms on the approach road; you need a car for everything.
Canso RV Park and Marina
Shoreline campground on Union Street, mid-May to October; the only option if you travel with a tent or RV.

Watch out
Safety
- Fog is common in summer when warm air meets cold water offshore: plan driving for daylight and allow extra time.
- Fuel and grocery options thin out on Trunk 16; fill up in Guysborough or Antigonish.
- Many restaurants and the museum shut outside Jun–Sep; check hours before you commit to a night.
- Cell coverage is patchy on stretches of the Eastern Shore.
