Princeton is a small Mercer County town on US-19 between Bluefield and Beckley, and its main job for travellers is lodging: a strip of motels and chain hotels at I-77 exits 9 and 14, a walkable historic downtown along Mercer Street, and two state parks within 20 minutes. The town itself needs half a day. The parks, the Bluestone Gorge and the New River make it worth one or two nights if you are driving through southern West Virginia.

Downtown Mercer Street is walkable between the railroad tracks and the courthouse. Everything else — the exit 9 hotel strip, Camp Creek, Pipestem, Athens — needs a car. There is no useful local bus for visitors; taxis and rideshare are thin, so do not plan on either after dark.
