Esino Lario sits in a sunny basin at about 910 m, 12 km and a 900 m climb above Varenna, with no lake frontage of its own. It is a walking base for the Grigna mountains and the Northern Grigna Regional Park, not a lake resort: two nights covers the two historic centres, Ortanella and one proper mountain walk. Anyone wanting ferry-hopping and waterfront dinners should sleep in Varenna, Perledo or Bellano and treat Esino as a day trip.

Getting around

On foot inside the village; signs mark the main landmarks. Trails are numbered and codified by CAI. A car helps for Ortanella and Cainallo trailheads, but village lanes are narrow. The public bus connects Esino to Perledo, Varenna and Bellano, with two stops in the village, Piazza Gulfi and Piazza Italia; the timetable is built around school and commuter runs, so check times before relying on it. No taxi is based in Esino Lario: taxis wait at Varenna Esino station and in Varenna and Perledo, so book ahead or arrange one at the station rather than expecting an on-demand car in the village.

Safety

A quiet mountain village with no notable crime risk. The real hazards are the narrow hairpin road from Varenna, unmarked trail junctions above 1,500 (≈ US$1,800) m, and fast afternoon thunderstorms: tell someone your route and turn back early.
  • The Varenna road is narrow with many hairpin bends; the Bellano–Parlasco road is longer but wider and easier in summer traffic.
  • Bus times are designed for students and commuters, with few runs; confirm the return bus before you set out.
  • No taxis are based in Esino Lario; taxis wait at Varenna Esino station and in Varenna and Perledo.
  • Mountain roads classed agro-silva-pastorali need authorisation for cars.
  • Rain falls in every season and summer thunderstorms are frequent; carry a shell even on clear mornings.
  • Many holiday homes and some businesses close outside summer.
