Rioverde is a small city of about 60,000 in the south of San Luis Potosí state, on the road between San Luis Potosí city and the Huasteca Potosina. Travellers come for two things: the warm spring pools at Manantial Media Luna, 10 km south, and the Grutas de la Catedral y del Ángel, west along MEX-70. The centro has a plaza, a 18th-century parish church and a regional museum, but it is not a colonial set piece. Two nights covers the springs and the cave; three if you add Tamasopo waterfalls.

Getting around

The centro is walkable in 20–30 minutes end to end. Media Luna and the caves are 10–40 km out with no useful public transport: drive, take a taxi and agree the return, or join a tour from town. MEX-70 west to the cave turn-off is paved; the last stretch to the cave is a narrow dirt road.

Spring-fed pools at a steady 38 °C, a swimming lake with a diving platform and a 50 m pool used by local divers. Closed Tuesdays; entry and camping fees are low. Go at opening for empty water.

Grutas de la Catedral y del Ángel

Drive west on MEX-70 about 30 min, then the signed dirt road about 20 km

Guided tour runs about 90 minutes; sturdy shoes needed. Rough access road — high-clearance vehicle, and check conditions after rain.

Watch out

Safety

Rioverde is a quiet provincial city and the usual cautions apply: use taxis at night, keep to the centro and hotel strips, and carry cash for parks and caves. The bigger real risks are the rough cave road, uneven wet cave paths and summer heat.
  • The cave access road is rough and about 20 km from the highway; a high-clearance vehicle is recommended, especially after rain.
  • The cave path is uneven, wet in places and needs some climbing; children under 5 are not recommended.
  • Media Luna is closed Tuesdays; the regional museum is closed Sunday and Monday.
  • Carry small cash for park and cave entry and for the bus-station restrooms.
  • Summer heat and afternoon rain from June to September.
