Lake Placid is a village of about 2,500 people in the Adirondack Park, host of the 1932 and 1980 Winter Olympics. It works as a 2-night base for Olympic history, Mirror Lake and Whiteface Mountain, and as a 3-4 night base if you plan to hike the High Peaks. You need a car for anything outside the village centre.

Getting around

The village centre is walkable: Main Street and Mirror Lake are 5-15 min on foot from most hotels. A free trolley runs along the lake in season; check the current route and dates. For Whiteface Mountain, the High Peaks trailheads, Keene and Wilmington you need a car; there is no useful local bus network.

Watch out

Safety

Very safe for a US resort village; the real risks are winter driving on mountain roads, cold-weather exposure on hikes and bears around campsites. Tell someone your trail plan.
  • Winter driving: Route 73 and the Whiteface road ice up; check conditions and carry chains or snow tyres in season.
  • High Peaks trailhead parking fills before 08:00 on summer weekends; arrive early or use a shuttle where one runs.
  • Cell coverage drops on the mountain roads; download offline maps.
  • Black bears are active around campsites and trails: store food properly.
  • Many seasonal businesses close from late October to December and again in April.
