Hamilton Island
Stay 2–3 nights if you fly in for the reef and Whitehaven; skip it as a base if you want cheap food or a car — buggies only, resort prices.
Hamilton Island is the only Whitsunday island with an airport, a marina, a supermarket and a full spread of hotels, so most people use it as the Whitsundays base rather than a single resort. It is a resort island: cars are banned, golf buggies and free shuttles do the work, and food and beds cost more than on the mainland. Two to three nights covers Whitehaven Beach, a reef trip and Passage Peak; add nights only if you are sailing or diving.

Getting around
No private cars. Free shuttles loop the resort and marina every 15 minutes, with two more circuits covering the rest of the island. Golf buggies are the usual way to move bags and people: hire from about A$87 a day, driver's licence and credit card required. Walking between the airport, marina and resort means climbing the hill — about 20 minutes each way.
