Sedbergh is a small Cumbria town of about 1,500 people in the Rawthey valley, 10 miles east of Kendal, and since 2016 part of the Yorkshire Dales National Park. It is a walking base, not a sightseeing town: the Howgill Fells rise straight from the streets, and the Dales Way passes half a mile south. Two nights covers the fells, the town and Brigflatts; a car or a taxi makes the surrounding dales reachable.

Getting around

The town is walkable in 10 minutes end to end. For the fells, Dentdale, Garsdale and Hawes you need a car, bike or taxi: Western Dales bus S1 runs from Kendal three times Mon–Sat, about 35 min, via Oxenholme station, and extends to Dent on Wed and Sat and to Kirkby Stephen on Tue and Thu. Oxenholme is the nearest main-line station, about 10 miles west; Dent and Garsdale stations on the Settle–Carlisle line are east over the moors.

Watch out

Safety

Very low crime; the real risks are fell weather, mud on the Dales Way, weak mobile signal and single-track roads with passing places. Tell someone your route and carry a map.
  • Mobile signal is patchy: O2 gives 4G in town and on approach roads, EE, Three and Vodafone are weak; no 5G. Download maps and tickets before you arrive.
  • The Dales Way section by the Pepperpot and the riverside is often muddy — boots, not trainers.
  • Fell weather changes fast and paths are unmarked in places; carry a paper map, waterproofs and a headtorch in winter.
  • Bus S1 does not run on Sunday and some extensions run only on set weekdays: check the timetable before you plan a car-free day.
  • Most eating places are pubs with limited kitchens; book a table in summer and on weekends.
