AwkaỌka
Give Awka one night, two at most: use it as a base for the Ogbunike Caves and Igbo-Ukwu bronzes, not as a city to sightsee in itself.

- Africa ↗When a route touches a yellow-fever country — even a transit of 12 hours or more — keep the original yellow card (ICVP) in your hand luggage; health desks and airlines can refuse boarding or entry without it.
- Africa ↗Nine African countries on this site have no trip line because governments advise against travel; several others have no-go regions. Read your government's advice for every country on the route before paying deposits.
- West Africa ↗Carry an original yellow fever vaccination certificate on any West African trip: several countries on the coast road demand it of every arrival, and the rest demand it after you have passed through a neighbour.
- West Africa ↗Cross land borders and drive between cities in daylight only; plan each crossing as a full travel day with cash for fees and passport copies for checkpoints.
- Nigeria ↗Check visa and entry rules for your passport with the Nigeria Immigration Service or a Nigerian mission; most visitors need a visa arranged before travel.
- Nigeria ↗Governments advise against all or all but essential travel to a number of Nigerian states; check your own government's advice for each state on your route.
- Nigeria ↗Check the yellow-fever vaccination certificate rules for Nigeria before you fly; carry the certificate with your passport.
Awka is the capital of Anambra State and one of the oldest settlements in Igboland, sitting at the centre of the old Nri civilisation. It is a working administrative and university city — Nnamdi Azikiwe University gives it a large student population — rather than a tourist town. Travellers come for the region around it: the Ogbunike Caves, the bronze-casting heritage at Igbo-Ukwu, and the markets and festivals of Igbo country. Plan one night, two if you want a full day for the caves.

Getting around
Tricycles (keke) and motorcycle taxis (okada) are the main way around; taxis and private cars also work. Fares are short-hop and cheap — agree the price before you get in. The Onitsha–Enugu expressway cuts through the city and is the spine for buses and long-distance travel.

Watch out
Safety
- Check your government's travel advice for Anambra State before booking; security conditions change and some countries advise against non-essential travel to parts of the south-east.
- Avoid night road travel outside the city; checkpoints and poor lighting make it risky.
- Eke Awka market area has heavy traffic and pickpocketing risk; keep bags in front.
- Bring cash — many small businesses and tricycle riders do not take cards, and ATMs can be empty or offline.
- Harmattan dust from December to February can reduce visibility and dry out your throat.
