Cleveland

Give Cleveland 2 nights: one for Downtown and the Rock Hall, one for University Circle museums. Add a third only if you want the lake or a ballgame.

Cleveland sits on the south shore of Lake Erie, 13 mi of lakefront between Downtown and the airport. Its two sight clusters — Downtown and University Circle on the East Side — are 5 mi apart, so plan by cluster, not by neighbourhood. Two nights covers the core; three if you add a game, the lake or a day trip.

  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Getting around

A car is the easy answer: the grid is simple, streets are numbered East and West from Ontario Street, and rush hour is mild by US standards. Without a car, the RTA Red Line links the airport, Downtown and University Circle, and buses fill the gaps; rideshare covers the rest. Downtown to University Circle is about 15 min by car, 25–30 min by rail plus a walk.

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Downtown

Walk to the Rock Hall, Playhouse Square and the sports arenas; best for a first, car-free visit.

Ohio City / Tremont

West Side, 5–10 min by car or Red Line from Downtown; West Side Market, restaurants, quieter nights.

University Circle

East Side museum cluster; stay here if museums are the point and you don't mind a 15-min drive Downtown.

Airport area

Cheap beds near CLE; only worth it for a dawn flight.

Watch out

Safety

Downtown and the museum district are busy and generally fine by day and evening. The real cautions are winter driving, unlit blocks on the East Side after dark, and bars with no posted prices: ask the total before you order.
  • Lake-effect snow hits the East Side hardest from mid-November until Lake Erie freezes, often by early February.
  • Amtrak's Lakefront Station is closed 1PM–9:30PM and most trains call between 1AM and 5AM.
  • Some East Side blocks are fine by day and not by night; stay on lit main roads and don't walk far from your hotel after dark.
  • Prices in shops and menus exclude sales tax; sit-down restaurants expect 18–22% tip.
