St. Christoph am Arlberg is one of Austria's highest ski villages, a cluster of hotels, guesthouses and lifts at 1,793 m in the Stanzer Valley, administratively part of St. Anton. Around 40 people live here year-round but there are beds for roughly 700, so the place exists for skiing in winter and hiking in summer. There is almost nothing to see beyond the hospice building, its chapel and the pass summit; you come here to be on the snow or the trail within minutes of your bed. Two to four nights covers a normal ski break. Winter runs from late November to late April, summer hiking from June to September.

Getting around

Walk. The village is a few hundred metres across and everything sits on one road. Ski lifts take you uphill: the St. Christophbahn chair lift to Galzig (2,183 m), plus the Maienseelift and the St. Christoph practice lift. Postbus line 92 runs hourly or better between St. Anton, St. Christoph, Zürs and Lech; in ski season free shuttles link Zürs and Lech.

Watch out

Safety

A very safe village; the real risks are mountain weather, avalanche terrain and the drive over the pass. Check lawine.at for the avalanche level before any off-piste day, and carry the 140 mountain-rescue number.
  • The 197 pass road can close in winter when avalanche risk is high; check road status before driving.
  • Village car parks are reserved for hotel guests — day visitors use the large lot at the ski lift.
  • There is no grocery shop; the nearest ones are in St. Anton, about 6 km away.
  • At 1,793 (≈ US$2,500) m the weather turns fast; carry layers and check the avalanche report before going off-piste.
  • Between seasons (roughly May and November) lifts and several hotels close — confirm before booking.
