Santander is the capital of Cantabria and a working port on Spain's north coast, with a compact centre, a 1.3 km city beach at El Sardinero and the Magdalena headland 3 km east. The Atlantic here is cold and tidal, so this is a city for walking, seafood and museums rather than swimming. Two nights covers it; most international visitors arrive by ferry from the UK and leave the same day, which is a mistake.

Getting around

The centre is walkable: Town Hall to Magdalena headland or El Sardinero is 4 km. TUS city buses run 24 lines; a single ticket is €1.30 in 2026, pay on boarding, no transfers, or €0.66 per journey on a rechargeable card (€1 for the card plus €6 minimum load, free transfers within one hour, not valid on the airport bus). Taxi ranks at the bus and railway stations.

Watch out

Safety

Santander is a low-crime city and safe to walk at night in the centre and along the seafront. The real risks are the cold, tidal Atlantic, wet and windy promenades, and pickpockets around the bus and ferry stations in summer.
  • The Atlantic is cold and tidal: much of the beach is under water at high tide, and north-westerly weather makes bathing unsafe.
  • The city bike-share scheme TUeBici is not working; do not plan around it.
  • Non-Schengen departures at SDR: gates 6 and 7 have no toilets or other facilities, so do not clear passport control more than 45 min before your flight.
  • Ferry crossings across the Bay of Biscay are exposed to Atlantic swells; book a cabin if you are prone to seasickness.
