Stop one night on the Christchurch–Dunedin drive: Caroline Bay, the basilica and the rock-art centre fill an afternoon, not two days.
Timaru is Canterbury's second city, a port of about 28,000 on the east coast roughly halfway between Christchurch (157 km, about 2 h) and Dunedin. It is a working town with a sheltered beach at Caroline Bay, a handful of solid sights and good motels — a natural overnight break on State Highway 1 rather than a destination in itself. Most travellers give it one night, or use it as a base for inland Geraldine and Peel Forest.

Getting around
The centre is walkable — Stafford Street, the museum and Caroline Bay are within about 15 minutes on foot. Suburban buses link the centre to the outer suburbs; for the botanic gardens, Washdyke Lagoon or day trips inland you want a car. Taxis are the fallback for the airport and late nights.
