Manchester is a small Puget Sound waterfront community of about 5,000 people, part of the Port Orchard area on the Kitsap Peninsula. It has a pier, a boat launch, a library, a restaurant and Manchester State Park — and that is roughly the whole list. It works as a quiet 1–2 night stop between Bremerton, Port Orchard and the Southworth ferry, not as a destination in itself. Most travellers see it in an afternoon.

Getting around

A car is the practical option: Manchester's three main streets are Colchester Dr SE, E Chester Rd and Beach Dr E, and the shops, library and restaurant cluster within walking distance of the pier. Kitsap Transit buses run through the area and connect to ferry terminals, and fares sit in the regional ORCA system. On foot you can cover the centre in 15 minutes; everything else needs wheels or a boat.

Safety

Manchester is a low-crime residential waterfront area and feels safe day and night. The real risks are water and weather: cold Puget Sound water, slippery launch ramps, and dark, unlit roads with no pavement outside the centre.
  • No overnight parking or moorage at the Manchester Boat Launch; day use only.
  • Manchester State Park campsites are first come, first served from about mid-September to mid-May; book ahead in summer.
  • Cell coverage and services are thin outside the centre; fill up and buy supplies in Port Orchard or Bremerton.
  • Ferry queues at Southworth and Bremerton back up on summer weekends and holiday Mondays.
