Newtownabbey is a commuter town of about 68,000 people just north of Belfast, formed in 1958 from Whiteabbey and surrounding villages. It has few sights and very little accommodation, so most travellers pass through rather than stay. Come for Ulster University, Mossley Mill, the Loughshore walk, or a cheaper hotel on the Belfast approach roads.

Getting around

Metro buses 1A and 2C–2J cross the town from Belfast, and Ulsterbus 563 links Whiteabbey and Greenisland. Trains from Belfast stop at Whiteabbey and Jordanstown. The town is spread out and hilly, so a car or taxi is easier for Mossley Mill and Sentry Hill.

Safety

A quiet, low-crime commuter town; the main risks are traffic on the A2 and M2 approach roads, uneven coastal paths, and cold, wet weather on the lough shore.
  • Accommodation is very limited: book Belfast or Carrickfergus instead.
  • Beaches here are rock, mud and seaweed, not sand: fine for a walk, not for swimming.
  • Some Antrim Road venues close early on weekdays; check hours before travelling.
  • Trains to Mossley West do not stop at Whiteabbey: check which station you need.
