Candelaria is a small coastal town on Tenerife's east shore, 17 km southwest of Santa Cruz, and the main Catholic pilgrimage centre of the Canary Islands. The basilica, the cave shrine and the seafront square sit within a few minutes of each other, so the historic centre is done on foot in half a day. Most travellers come on the TF-1 motorway or bus line 111 and leave the same day; a night here buys a slow evening on the promenade and easy access to Güímar and the south.

Getting around
The historic centre is flat and walkable: basilica, square, cave and Calle Obispo Pérez Cáceres are all within about 10 minutes on foot. Bus line 111 (TITSA) runs along the coast between Santa Cruz and the south and stops in Candelaria; the TF-1 motorway is just inland. A car helps for Güímar, the Anaga hills and the south, but parking near the basilica fills on pilgrimage days.
