Montpellier is a compact, student-heavy Mediterranean city in the Hérault, about 3 h by TGV from Paris and 1 h 45 min from Lyon. The old town (Écusson) is walkable in a day, the tram network reaches the beach at Palavas and Carnon, and the city works well as a 2-night base for day trips to Sète, Bouzigues and Pézenas. Summer is hot and dry; spring and autumn are the best months.

Getting around

The centre is compact and walkable. Five tram lines run 04:30–01:00 (02:00 Fri–Sat), every 3–5 min at peak. Buy a ticket before boarding; a single ticket is €2.10 and covers transfers for 1.5 h. Buses use the same tickets. VéloMagg bike hire is about €10/day. Driving into the centre is a bad idea: park at a tram terminus and ride in.

Watch out

Safety

Montpellier is generally safe for tourists. The real risks are pickpockets around Place de la Comédie and the station, the Esplanade after dark, and tram ticket fines: validate your ticket.
  • Buy and validate your tram or bus ticket before boarding; inspectors fine on the spot and 'I'm a tourist' is not accepted.
  • The Esplanade Charles-de-Gaulle is best avoided after dark away from the lit parts.
  • The zoo is closed until late 2028.
  • The Musée d'Anatomie is closed for renovation; check before planning around it.
  • August: many independent shops and restaurants close for the holidays.
