ApexApex, North Carolina

Skip Apex as a base: it is a half-day stop on a Research Triangle trip — 2–3 hours downtown, then drive on to Raleigh or Cary.

Apex is a small town southwest of Raleigh, about 20 minutes by car from Cary and 25–30 minutes from downtown Raleigh. Its draw is a compact historic downtown of shops and restaurants on Salem Street, plus a handful of spring and summer festivals. There is no major museum or landmark here, so most travellers see it as an afternoon add-on to a Raleigh or Research Triangle stay rather than a destination of its own.

  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Getting around

A car is the practical way to reach and move around Apex. GoTriangle routes 311 and 305 serve the town but are limited commuter services with few daily trips, so check the schedule before relying on them. Downtown itself is small enough to walk in 10–15 minutes.

Day-trips

State museums and the downtown core; a full day on its own.

Door to door: 15–25 min by car

Drive NC 55 north or US 1 north

Easy pairing with Apex for dinner or an evening out.

Door to door: 35–45 min by car

Drive NC 55 north then I-40 east

Better as its own base than a day trip from Apex.

Door to door: 35–45 min by car

Drive via US 64 west and NC 54

Campus and Franklin Street; combine with Carrboro.

Pittsborocaution

Door to door: 30–40 min by car

Drive US 64 west

Small downtown; go only if you are already heading west.

Door to door: 35–45 min by car

Drive US 1 south

Little for a visitor; a pass-through on the way south.

Door to door: 45–55 min by car

Drive I-40 west then NC 86 north

Historic small town; pair it with Durham, not Apex.

Door to door: 40–50 min by car

Drive US 1 north then NC 98 east

Across the metro from Apex; no reason to combine them.

Watch out

Safety

Apex is a low-crime suburban town and feels safe by day and evening. The real risks are summer heat, driving on I-40 and US 1 at rush hour, and relying on a bus that runs only a few times a day.
  • GoTriangle service to Apex is commuter-oriented with limited trips: check times before you plan around it.
  • Summers are hot and humid; plan downtown walking for the morning.
  • Festival days close downtown streets and fill nearby parking: arrive early or park and walk.
