Korçë sits at 850 m in the southeastern highlands, 175 km from Tirana and about 40 km from Pogradec. It is a walking town: a renovated Old Bazaar, a strong icon museum, Albania's oldest brewery and a café-lined pedestrian boulevard. Most trips use it as one night between Tirana and the Prespa lakes or Gjirokastër.

Getting around

The centre is walkable in 15–20 minutes end to end. Urban buses exist but are rarely needed. Furgons cover nearby villages; for Voskopojë, Dardhë, Vithkuq or the Morava trails a car is easier. Bicycles can be rented in town.

Safety

Korçë is calm and walkable; the real risks are winter ice on pavements, unlit side streets after midnight and mountain roads in bad weather. Standard precautions are enough.
  • Winter nights drop below freezing; the town is at 850 m.
  • Furgons to villages leave early and fill up; confirm the last return before you go.
  • Some museums keep split hours and close for lunch; if a door is locked during posted hours, ring the buzzer.
  • Bring cash for the bazaar and small tavernas; not every stall takes cards.
