Craignure is Mull's main arrival point: the CalMac ferry from Oban lands here, and buses meet the boat for Tobermory and Fionnphort. The village itself is a pier, a shop, a bunkhouse and a castle three miles south. Most travellers use it as a transfer hour, not a stop.

Getting around

West Coast Motors buses 95/495 run 5–6 times daily between Craignure, Fishnish, Salen and Tobermory (about 50 min; no Sunday service Nov–Mar) and meet most ferries. Bus 96/496 runs three times Mon–Sat and once Sunday to Fionnphort for Iona (about 70 min). A car is the practical way to see the island: the A849 northwest is two-lane to Salen then mostly single track, and the road southwest to Fionnphort is single track throughout. Fill up on the mainland before the ferry.

Watch out

Safety

Very low crime; the real risks are single-track roads with passing places, weather that turns fast on Dùn da Ghaoithe, and no mobile signal in places. Tell someone your route before hill walks.
  • Walking to Duart Castle means 3 miles along a narrow road with no sidewalk; take a taxi or drive.
  • Mobile signal is patchy (EE, O2, Three; little or no Vodafone) and there is no 5G on Mull.
  • Fuel up on the mainland before boarding; island fuel is limited.
  • Midges are fierce Jun–Aug, especially at dusk near water.
  • Book ferry and beds ahead for May–Sep and school holidays.
