Öland is Sweden's second-largest island, reached by bridge from Kalmar in about 20 minutes. It is a summer place: cottages, beaches, windmills and a UNESCO-listed limestone plain. Public buses thin out badly outside the season, so a car or a rented bike decides what you actually see. Two nights covers the north and south; three if you want beach time.

Getting around

No railway on the island. Kalmar Länstrafik buses cover the main settlements, with more departures in the Jun–mid-Aug season and some routes running only on school days. A car is the practical choice outside summer; roads are narrow and busy in July. Bikes ride free on the buses, and cycling the signposted Ölandsleden route is the best way to see the landscape. Bikes cannot be ridden over the Öland bridge — use the summer bike bus or the Kalmar–Färjestaden ferry.

Watch out

Safety

Very safe, like the rest of rural Sweden. The practical risks are fog and Baltic storms, narrow farm roads at harvest, and closed kitchens after mid-August.
  • Many sights, cafés and restaurants close from mid-August; check opening days before you drive.
  • Bus service south of Mörbylånga is very limited outside summer.
  • Cycling over the Öland bridge is not allowed.
  • Fog and sudden Baltic storms are the real hazards; the island is otherwise very safe.
