Eyemouth is a working harbour town of about 3,600 people on the Berwickshire coast, 8 miles north of Berwick-upon-Tweed. It is the largest of a string of fishing villages — Burnmouth, Coldingham, St Abbs — strung along cliffs that carry the Berwickshire Coastal Path. The town itself fills an afternoon: harbour, museum, a short sandy strip. The reason to stay longer is the coast: seabird cliffs at St Abb's Head, diving at St Abbs, and cliff walking in both directions. Most travellers see it as a stop between Berwick and Edinburgh, not a base.

Getting around

The town is small enough to walk end to end in about 15 minutes. Borders Bus 235 links Berwick, Burnmouth, Eyemouth, Coldingham and St Abbs roughly eight times a day; bus 253 continues north to Dunbar and Edinburgh about four times a day, and bus 60 runs every two hours from Galashiels via Melrose. For the cliffs, beaches and Fast Castle you need a car, a bike or a taxi — the local firm is B & B (+44 1890 751575).

Watch out

Safety

A quiet, low-crime small town; the real risks are cliff edges, cold sea and weather that turns fast on the coastal path. Walk with a phone, tell someone your route, and do not swim where there is no lifeguard.
  • Reston station is a platform halt with ticket machines only and almost no onward transport: arrange a taxi before you arrive.
  • Gunsgreen House by the harbour is closed for refurbishment — check before planning around it.
  • The road down to St Abbs village is steep, narrow and congested: park at the NTS centre and walk.
  • Cliff paths are exposed to wind and spray, and the rock is loose in places; keep back from the edge.
  • Mobile coverage is patchy in St Abbs, Coldingham and along the A1107 (≈ US$1,500).
