Beer Sheva is the Negev's capital and its transport hub, about 1 h 30 min from Tel Aviv by train or bus. Most travellers pass through on the way to Eilat or Mitzpe Ramon. The reason to stop is the old Turkish town — the only planned Ottoman city in the region, laid out on a grid around 1900 — plus the Thursday Bedouin market and the UNESCO-listed Tel Beer Sheva mound east of the city. It is a working desert city, not a resort: streets are wide, blocks are 1950s, and the good parts are compact and walkable.

Getting around

The centre is walkable: Old Town to the central bus station is about 15 min on foot. City buses cost ₪4 and you cannot pay the driver in cash — use a Rav-Kav card or the app. Taxis anywhere in the city run about ₪20. Gett and Yango ride-hailing work here. Trains run hourly to Tel Aviv and Haifa; Beer Sheva Center station sits just south of the centre, and Beer Sheva North/University station serves the campus.

Watch out

Safety

A normal working city; the risks are summer heat, uneven pavements in the old town and the wider regional security situation. Check your government's travel advice before you book, and keep 100/101/102/104 on your phone.
  • Summer heat is the real risk: 33–35 °C days in Jul–Aug, so do sights before 11:00 and after 17:00.
  • Buses and trains stop for Shabbat and Jewish holidays; check the last departure before Friday afternoon.
  • The Negev Zoo charges about ₪30 and is a 20-min walk from the nearest bus stop; many visitors rate it below other Israeli zoos.
  • Some old-town streets are run down and poorly lit at night; stick to Smilansky and Keren Kayemet.
  • Read your own government's travel advice for the region before booking; this desk does not plan around it.
