Reading is a former railroad city of about 90,000 people, 50 miles northwest of Philadelphia, with a compact downtown, a mountaintop Pagoda and a working arts scene in an old goggle factory. It works as a one-night stopover on the drive between Philadelphia, Allentown and Hershey, or as a day trip from Philadelphia if you have a car.

Getting around

BARTA buses run the city and Berks County from the BARTA Transportation Center at 701 Franklin St; base fare is $1.70 with $0.25 transfers. A car is the practical choice for the Pagoda, the museums and day trips. Taxis run 24 hours; rideshare coverage is thinner than in Philadelphia.

Safety

Reading has a higher crime rate than the surrounding Berks County suburbs; downtown daytime is fine, and the practical rule is to stay on lit main streets after dark, keep bags out of sight in parked cars, and drive rather than walk to the Pagoda.
  • Downtown is quiet after dark outside event nights; park in lit lots and walk main streets.
  • The Pagoda and Skyline Drive are on a steep, winding road: no sidewalk, drive or ride, do not walk up.
  • Some downtown blocks have vacant storefronts; check the route to your hotel before booking.
  • Summer afternoons are humid; the Pagoda climb is best before 11:00.
