Gebze is an industrial city 65 km east of Istanbul, on the Marmaray line and the O-4 highway. Its sights are thin and spread out, and the centre is modern and plain. Most travellers use it for the Eskihisar–Topçular ferry, a Marmaray stop, or a work stay; a half day covers the historic core and Hannibal's memorial.

Getting around

Bus 416 runs every 10 min between Arapçeşme, the town centre and Eskihisar. For Hereke use the regional train or bus 500 from Darıca via Gebze station, about every 45 min. Taxis and minibuses cover the rest; a car helps for Ballıkayalar and Dilovası.

Watch out

Safety

Gebze is a working industrial city and feels ordinary rather than threatening. Watch traffic on the D100 and O-4, keep to lit streets at night, and treat the 1999 earthquake zone as a reason to check building age, not a daily risk.
  • The three city-centre museums marked on maps do not exist; check before you walk.
  • Eskihisar Castle doubles as an open-air theatre, so access is erratic outside posted hours.
  • Hannibal's tomb sits inside the Tübitak research grounds: free entry Mon–Fri 10:00–15:00 only, bring ID.
  • Long-distance buses and YHT trains will not sell the short hop to or from Istanbul; use Marmaray.
