Garrettsville

Skip as a base: Garrettsville is a half-day stop. Come for the Headwaters Trail and Nelson Ledges, then sleep in Kent or Akron.

Garrettsville is a village of about 2,300 people in Portage County, northeast Ohio, on State Routes 82 and 88. There is no train and no airport: you drive here. The reason to come is the crushed-limestone Headwaters Trail to Mantua (about 6 miles) and Nelson Ledges State Park, 15 minutes east. Downtown has historic buildings and a boardwalk over a small waterfall. One afternoon covers it; most travellers sleep in Kent, 20 minutes away.

  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Garrettsville village

Very few beds; a handful of inns and rentals. Book ahead or plan to drive in.

Rustic campground at Nelson Ledges with a quarry lake and swimming beach; no showers and few facilities. Quieter midweek and off-season; festival weekends are loud and cost more.

Watch out

Safety

A quiet village and low-crime area; the real risks are rural roads at night, deer on SR 82 and SR 88, and icy trails in winter. Lock your car at trailheads.
  • No train or airport: arrive by car, and check winter road conditions before a January or February drive.
  • Nelson Ledges State Park and Nelson Ledges Quarry Park are different places on the same road: the state park is free and public, the quarry park is private and charges entry.
  • Quarry Park has no showers and few facilities; bring water and cash.
  • Cell coverage is fine in the village but patchy on trail sections; download an offline map.
