Bogor

Give Bogor one full day for the Botanical Gardens and palace grounds, or two nights if you want Taman Safari and Puncak; skip it as a base for Jakarta sightseeing.

Bogor sits 60 km south of Jakarta at 290 m, so it runs cooler than the capital and is the classic weekend escape for Jakartans. The Botanical Gardens, the presidential palace grounds and the colonial hill-town core are the draw; most visitors come as a day trip from Jakarta or as a stop on the way to Puncak and Bandung. Traffic is heavy and rain is frequent, so plan mornings outdoors.

Getting around

Angkot minibuses cover central streets for a flat Rp2,000 paid on exit, but they are slow, often fill before departing and theft is reported. Blue Bird taxis and Gojek/Grab cars are more comfortable; allow extra time in the daily jam. Walking works for the Juanda corridor and gardens, but riverside lanes are fragmented — ask locally for current access.

Door-to-door, not ride time

Puncak and Taman Safari

caution

Door to door: About 2–3 h each way on weekends

Car or ride-hailing up Jl. Raya Puncak, about 1–1.5 h from central Bogor

Go on a weekday; weekend traffic up the pass can double the drive.

Cianjur

go

Door to door: About 1.5–2 h

Car or bus south on the Puncak route

Rice-terrace country and a quieter stop than Puncak.

Sukabumi

overnight

Door to door: About 2.5 h

Intercity train from Bogor Paledang, about 2 h 15 min

Rail is the easy leg; sleep one night before continuing.

Pelabuhan Ratu

overnight

Door to door: About 3–4 h

Car or bus via Sukabumi

Southern-coast surf town; too far for a return day.

Cimaja

overnight

Door to door: About 4 h

Car or bus via Sukabumi and Pelabuhan Ratu

Surf base; pair with Pelabuhan Ratu.

Ujung Genteng

overnight

Door to door: About 5–6 h

Car via Sukabumi, long final stretch

Remote south coast; plan at least two nights.

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Central Bogor (around Jl. Ir. H. Juanda)

Walk to the Botanical Gardens and palace grounds; most hotels, warungs and the main angkot routes are here.

Puncak / Cisarua (uphill)

Cooler, greener, near Taman Safari; 1–1.5 h by car from central Bogor and heavy on weekends.

Sentul / Bogor Nirwana (south and east)

Resort and golf hotels with pools; you need a car or ride-hailing for everything.

Watch out

Safety

Bogor is generally safe for visitors; the real risks are traffic, slippery paths in the gardens after rain, and petty theft on crowded angkot. Use ride-hailing at night and keep valuables zipped.
  • Afternoon rain is near-daily; do outdoor sights in the morning.
  • Traffic is heavy all day and worse on weekends and holidays.
  • Angkot theft is reported — keep bags on your lap and zipped.
  • Flash flooding on the Jakarta–Bogor route in the wet season (Nov–Mar).
  • Palace interior tours need about 5 days advance notice; the grounds are seen from inside the gardens.
