Scugog is a rural township of about 22,000 people in Durham Region, an hour northeast of Toronto. Almost everything a visitor wants sits in or near Port Perry, its lakeside main town: a heritage Queen Street, a museum village, a winery, a casino on Scugog Island and flat lake country for walking and cycling. It works as a day trip from Toronto or a one-night stop between the city and the Kawarthas.

Getting around

There is no useful local transit for sightseeing. Durham Region Transit route 905C links Whitby GO Station and Uxbridge to the Port Perry terminal in a little over an hour, and stops at Simcoe and Queen Streets near downtown. Once here, a car or taxi is the practical way to reach the casino, the museum village and the winery. Main roads: Simcoe Street north–south through Port Perry, Highway 7/12 past Greenbank, Highway 7A east–west, and Island Road on Scugog Island.

Watch out

Safety

Scugog is a low-crime rural township and Port Perry's downtown is calm at night. The real risks are driving: deer on Highway 7A and Island Road after dusk, winter ice, and no street lighting on country roads.
  • Without a car you are limited to downtown Port Perry; the casino, museum village and winery are 5–15 km out.
  • The last buses back toward Whitby GO run in the evening: check the schedule before you commit to a late dinner.
  • The winery closes in January and February except by appointment, and the museum village runs guided tours June–August only.
  • Casino floor is 19+; bring photo ID.
  • Winter roads north of town ice up; drive to conditions.
