Vigan is a UNESCO-listed Spanish-colonial town on the Ilocos Sur coast of northern Luzon, about 7–10 hours by road from Manila. The old mestizo district is small and walkable, so most travellers see it in a day and sleep one night. Two nights only if you add the pottery, weaving and beach stops around town.

Getting around

The centre is walkable: Plaza Salcedo to Calle Crisologo is about 10 minutes on foot. Tricycles cover the city for roughly ₱8–10 a ride; a private calesa is about ₱150 per hour, or around ₱1,000 for a full day. Streets around Plaza Burgos close to motor traffic on weekends.

Safety

The heritage district is compact and walkable, but keep to lit streets after dark and go with a companion if you can. Watch for tricycles and calesas in the narrow streets, keep your bag zipped in the public market, and agree tricycle fares before you ride — many are unposted.
  • Typhoon season runs roughly Jul–Oct; check forecasts before booking road travel.
  • Some heritage houses and the Bantay watchtower have restricted access after the 2022 earthquake: check locally.
  • Antiques sold on Crisologo and Plaridel Streets are mostly reproductions.
  • Buses from Manila take 7–10 hours; a daytime departure is easier than an overnight one.
