  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Venice is a Los Angeles district, not a city: a 3 km beach strip with a boardwalk, a surviving canal grid, and Abbot Kinney Boulevard. Most travellers see it in a half-day and sleep in Santa Monica or Marina del Rey, where hotels are cheaper and quieter. Sleep here only if you want the boardwalk at sunrise and at night.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

Walk the beach strip and the canals; rent a bike for the 35 km Marvin Braude beach path (no riding on the pedestrian boardwalk). Metro buses and the E Line rail link Venice to downtown LA and Santa Monica; a car is only useful for inland LA, and street parking is metered and enforced.

See & do

Day-trips, door to door

Day-trips

Door-to-door, not ride time

Santa Monica

go

Door to door: 30–45 min

Walk or bike the beach path north, or Metro bus along Lincoln Blvd

Pier, Third Street Promenade and more food; easy half-day.

Culver City

go

Door to door: 30–50 min

Metro bus or the E Line rail, then walk downtown Culver City

Restaurant-heavy downtown; good rainy-day swap.

Marina del Rey

go

Door to door: 20–30 min

Metro bus south along Lincoln Blvd, or a 10-min drive

Harbour walk and waterfront restaurants; short evening trip.

Malibu

caution

Door to door: 45–75 min

Drive CA-1 north via Santa Monica

Needs a car and a full day; traffic back is heavy on Sundays.

Beverly Hills

caution

Door to door: 40–60 min

Metro bus or drive east

Shopping and architecture, not a beach day; go on a weekday.

West Hollywood

caution

Door to door: 45–70 min

Metro bus or drive east via Santa Monica Blvd

Best for an evening out, not a daytime sight.

Westchester, California

skip

Door to door: 25–40 min

Metro bus or drive south past LAX

Mostly airport hotels and offices; only useful before a flight.

Eat & sleep

Which area to sleep in

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Ocean Front Walk / Windward

Steps from the sand and the boardwalk; noisiest and priciest, book early.

Abbot Kinney / canals

Quieter residential streets, cafés and shops; 10–15 min walk to the beach.

Washington Blvd near the pier

Restaurants and bars at the south end; good for one night with a car.

Santa Monica or Marina del Rey (nearby)

More rooms and better value; 10–20 min by bus or car.

Watch out

Safety

Daytime on the boardwalk is busy and generally fine; the real risks are petty theft from cars, dark beach and canal paths at night, and cash-only vendors with no posted price. Keep to lit streets after dark and swim near lifeguards.
  • Boardwalk vendors and performers expect cash tips; agree a price before a henna tattoo, massage or photo.
  • Do not leave anything visible in a parked car, including the trunk.
  • Ocean Front Walk is busy and lit at night; the beach and canals are dark — walk the canals in daylight.
  • Marine layer can sit over the beach until midday even in summer; go inland or wait it out.
  • Cold water and rip currents: swim near a staffed lifeguard tower.
