- North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
- North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
- North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
- United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
- United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
- United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
- United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Cape Krusenstern National Monument protects a coastal plain of more than 100 beach ridges in Arctic Alaska, built up one storm at a time over roughly 9,000 years of human use — the longest such archaeological sequence in the Arctic. There is no road, no trail, no gate and no entrance fee; the visitor centre is 60 km away in Kotzebue, and everyone arrives by air taxi, boat, snowmobile or on foot. The lagoons behind the ridges hold seals, salmon and about 150 breeding bird species, while caribou, muskoxen and brown bears move across the tundra. It is a place for self-sufficient travellers with Arctic skills, not for a quick stop.

Time out
Finding the local time zone…
Times are local to the spot (zone loading). The half-hour margin is our rule of thumb, not an official figure; light fades earlier in forest or under cloud. Carry a headlamp on any route that could run late.
Accessibility
- There are no accessible trails, boardwalks or facilities in the monument; the terrain is wet tundra and gravel.
- The Northwest Arctic Heritage Center in Kotzebue is the accessible place to see exhibits and get information.
Visiting lightly
- Follow leave-no-trace practice: no fires on the tundra, no trenches, pack out all waste.
- Keep distance from muskoxen, bears and nesting birds rather than moving closer for a photo.
- Use local pilots and Kotzebue businesses so the money from access stays in the region.
- Do not collect artefacts, antlers or plants from the beach ridges.
Questions people ask
How much does it cost to enter Cape Krusenstern National Monument?
Nothing. There is no entrance fee, no gate and no road in. The real cost is access: an air charter from Kotzebue runs about US$600–700 per flight hour (2026 estimate), so a day trip is usually shared between passengers.
What are the best hikes in Cape Krusenstern National Monument?
There are no maintained trails. The usual walks are along the coastal beach ridges and the gravel bars, or inland over wet tundra to the limestone bluffs. Beach walking is the easiest underfoot; tundra walking is slow and wet, so plan on covering far less distance than a marked trail would allow.
When is the best time to visit Cape Krusenstern National Monument?
June to August. The sun does not set from about 3 June to 9 July, birds are nesting and the tundra is green. July is warmest but has the worst mosquitoes; August is drier for walking but stormier. Winter travel is possible by snowmobile, ski or dog sled but needs expert skills and local support.
Do I need a permit?
No permit is needed for entry or for backcountry camping in most cases. You do need an air charter booked in advance, and an Alaska sport fishing licence if you plan to fish. Check current rules with the National Park Service before you fly.
How do I get there?
Fly to Kotzebue from Anchorage, then take an air taxi into the monument; there are no roads. Bettles is an alternative base from the Interior side. In summer some parties arrive by boat, and in winter by snowmobile, ski, snowshoe or dog sled.
Can I see the midnight sun and the northern lights?
Yes, but not on the same trip. The sun stays up from about 3 June to 9 July; aurora needs dark skies, so come between late August and April, accepting cold and stormy weather.
Is there anywhere to stay?
In the monument, only backcountry camping with no facilities. The nearest beds, shops and the visitor centre are in Kotzebue, so most trips start and end with a night there.
