Victoria's second-largest city sits 75 km southwest of Melbourne on Corio Bay, an hour by V/Line train. It works as a low-cost base for the Bellarine Peninsula and the start of the Great Ocean Road, with a compact waterfront, a strong wool-history museum and an AFL ground. Most travellers pass through in a day; two nights lets you add the Bellarine or the You Yangs.

Getting around

The CBD and waterfront are walkable. Buses (McHarry's and CDC Geelong) use myki and cover the suburbs; the Geelong Line train links seven stations from Corio to Waurn Ponds. Taxis (13CABS, Geelong Taxi Network) and Uber/DiDi operate. Bike hire is limited to waterfront afternoons on weekends and school holidays, no reservations.

Watch out

Safety

Geelong is generally safe for tourists; the main risks are cold water and rips at ocean beaches, extreme summer UV, and late-night noise around the CBD pubs. Use normal city caution after dark.
  • Metered CBD parking costs about $2.90 (≈ US$2)/hour Mon–Fri 9:00–17:30 and is often time-limited; outside the centre it is usually free.
  • A myki card is required for all trains and buses; paper tickets are not sold on board.
  • Beaches on Corio Bay are calm and family-friendly, but ocean beaches on the Bellarine and Surf Coast have rips: swim between the flags.
  • Summer UV is extreme; use sunscreen and check fire danger ratings if you drive inland.
