Cochrane is a town of about 32,000 people 30 km northwest of Calgary on Highway 1A, where it meets the Cowboy Trail (Highway 22). It is a half-day stop for ice cream, coffee and western-style Main Street, plus a base for the Bow River valley, the 7% hill climb and paragliding. Most travellers see it as a Calgary day trip; a night here buys a quieter, cheaper bed than Banff or Canmore.

Getting around
A car is the practical choice: sights and the campground sit outside the walkable core. Cochrane On-demand Local Transit (COLT) runs app- or phone-booked buses at fixed stops with no fixed routes or schedules, $2.50 a ride (check). The town has about 30 km of pathways for walking and cycling, and the hill is a known local climb.
