Rainy River

One night, only if you are crossing the Baudette bridge or fishing: the town itself is a 2-hour stop. Otherwise skip and stay in Fort Frances or Kenora.

Rainy River is a town of about 800 people on the Ontario-Minnesota border, where Highway 11 ends at the bridge to Baudette, Minnesota. There is one real sight nearby (the Manitou Mounds, 33 km east), a supermarket, a bakery and a handful of beds. Come for the border, the walleye water or the mounds; do not come for a town.

  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • Canada ↗Visa-exempt travellers flying to or through Canada usually need an eTA; check your passport on the official Government of Canada site (canada.ca) and apply only there.
  • Canada ↗A Parks Canada pass is needed to stop in national parks such as Banff and Jasper; some spots (for example Moraine Lake) are reached only by shuttle or tour, so book ahead.
  • Canada ↗Keep well away from bears, elk and moose; carry bear spray on Rockies trails and follow trail closures.

Getting around

You need a car. Highway 11 runs through town as Atwood Avenue and ends at the Baudette bridge; Highway 71 north to Kenora branches from the area. There is no useful local transit, and the sights outside town are 30 km or more away.

Drive Lighthouse Road, 647

Privately owned and moved inland in the 1960s; limited visiting hours, check first.

Fort Frances

Watch out

Safety

Very low crime; the real risks are the highway (wildlife, winter ice, long gaps between services) and the border itself, where you need your passport and must declare what you carry.
  • Carry your passport: the Baudette bridge is a real international crossing and you clear customs both ways.
  • Fuel and food gaps: fill up and buy groceries in town before heading east on Highway 11 or north on 71.
  • Winter driving: Highway 11 and 71 can be snow-covered and services are sparse; check road conditions before you leave.
  • Moose and deer on the highway at dawn and dusk.
  • Cell coverage is thin outside town; download offline maps.
