  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Sonoma is a small wine-country town of about 10,600 people built around one central plaza, with the 1823 mission, General Vallejo's mansion and the Bear Flag story on the same block. Two nights covers the historic core, a tasting or two and a plaza picnic; a third day is for the wider valley by car or bike.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

The plaza core is walkable. Sonoma County Transit buses link Sonoma to other county towns, but service is limited; a car or bike is better for wineries. Bike rentals and guided wine tours run from town, and local taxi companies cover the valley.

Watch out

Safety

Sonoma is a low-crime small town; the real risks are wine-country driving after tastings, summer heat on the exposed plaza and cyclists on Route 12.
  • No freeway reaches Sonoma: Route 12 through town is the main road, and traffic backs up at commute times.
  • Wineries are spread across the valley; without a car or a booked tour you will miss most of them.
  • Tasting fees are common and often waived if you buy a bottle; ask before you pour.
  • Summer afternoons regularly pass 30 °C, and the plaza has little shade at midday.
