Jalpa is a small colonial mining town in southern Zacatecas, founded in 1532 and once worked for gold, silver and tin. The draw is a compact centro of stone churches, a plaza and a hilltop Guadalupe sanctuary, plus a rare mineral, jalpaite, first identified here in 1858. It is a one-night stop between Aguascalientes and Zacatecas, not a destination in itself.

Getting around

The centro is a flat grid and walking covers it in about 20 minutes end to end. Local taxis are small sedans and wait at the sitio beside Plaza Arechiga on Calle 20 Noviembre; ask hotel staff to call a radio taxi instead of hailing one. For the hilltop sanctuary you need a car or a taxi, and the last stretch is on foot.

Watch out

Safety

Jalpa is a quiet small town and the centro is calm by day. The real issues are driving at night on rural roads, cash shortages at ATMs, and taxis: use the plaza sitio or a radio taxi called by your hotel.
  • The hilltop sanctuary is a climb: go early, carry water, and skip it in rain.
  • Some churches close between services; check the door times locally.
  • Small-town ATMs run out on weekends and holidays: bring cash from Aguascalientes or Zacatecas.
  • Bus departures are punctual and stops are short: be at the station ahead of time.
