Wendover is one town split by a state line: Wendover, Utah (about 1,400 people) and West Wendover, Nevada (about 4,300), 120 mi / 190 km west of Salt Lake City on I-80. Nevada's side has five casino resorts, the Utah side has the historic WWII airfield and the Bonneville Salt Flats just east. It works as a one-night road stop or a base for land-speed events, not as a destination on its own.

A car is the easy answer: Wendover Blvd runs the length of town, about 2.5 mi / 4 km end to end, parallel to I-80. The Nugget and Red Garter run free 24/7 shuttles on the west side; Toana Taxi is call-for-pickup, typical fare around $10 (check).

Safety

Low street crime; the real risks are desert heat and sun on the salt flats, winter snow on I-80, and drinking on the casino strip. Don't walk far along the highway shoulder at night.
  • Summer heat on the salt flats: carry more water than you think you need, plus shade and sunscreen — the surface reflects.
  • Driving onto the flats is off-road desert travel; rinse the underside of the car afterwards or salt residue corrodes metal.
  • Non-US visitors: big casino wins can face a 30% IRS withholding; keep the 1042-S form to reclaim.
  • Both sides of town keep Mountain Time year-round, unlike the rest of Nevada.
  • Speed Week and World of Speed fill Wendover hotels weeks ahead; book early or plan to camp.
