Courtenay is the service town of the Comox Valley on Vancouver Island's east coast, about 26,000 people, with Comox and Cumberland next door. It is a base, not a sight in itself: the draw is Mount Washington, the Puntledge and Courtenay rivers, Seal Bay and Kitty Coleman, plus the K'ómoks cultural sites. Two nights covers the valley; three if you ski or hike.

BC Transit Comox Valley runs 13 routes from the Cliffe Ave stop in downtown Courtenay: Route 1 to Comox, Route 11 to the airport and Little River ferry, Route 10 south to Fanny Bay and Buckley Bay. A car is faster for Mount Washington, Nymph Falls and Kitty Coleman. Taxis run 24 h.
