Grobogan
Go for one night from Semarang or Solo if you want Bledug Kuwu's mud volcano and cheap Javanese food; skip if you need beaches, nightlife or easy walking.
Grobogan is a flat farming regency in Central Java, based around the town of Purwodadi. Its one real draw is Bledug Kuwu, a mud volcano that throws salty mud every few minutes. Everything else — caves, a waterfall, an eternal flame, a reservoir — is spread across a large area with weak public transport, so a car or a hired driver decides whether the day works. One night is enough; two if you want to move slowly between the western and eastern sights.

Getting around
No useful public transport between the sights. Angkot minivans run from Purwodadi bus terminal on local routes, but they are slow and stop early. For Bledug Kuwu, Api Abadi Mrapen and the caves, hire a car with a driver for the day or ride a scooter if you are confident on Javanese roads.

Safety
- Distances look short on the map but roads are narrow and slow; allow double the time you expect.
- Bledug Kuwu is an active mud vent: stay on the marked ground, keep children back from the wet mud, and expect a strong sulphur and salt smell.
- Cave and waterfall paths get slick in the wet season; wear shoes with grip and skip them after heavy rain.
- Bring cash. Card payment is unreliable outside the bigger Purwodadi hotels.
- Some sites have no fixed ticket office: agree any guide or parking fee before you walk in.
