Go for one night, not a day trip: boats allow only about 4 hours ashore, and Düne's beach and the cliff path need a full day.

Rules in force · 7Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…
  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Central Europe ↗Six of the nine countries here — Austria, Switzerland, Czechia, Slovakia, Hungary and Slovenia — charge a time-based motorway vignette, mostly digital and linked to the number plate; buy it before the first motorway past the border, because cameras, not toll booths, do the checking.
  • Central Europe ↗Temporary police checks at internal Schengen borders are common in this region in 2026 (Germany, Austria, Poland, Slovenia among others — check): keep your passport on you on every cross-border train, bus and road even though there is no fixed control post.
  • Germany ↗Germany is in the EU and the Schengen area: check entry rules, the EU Entry/Exit System and any travel authorisation requirement for your passport on official sources.
  • Germany ↗Nazi symbols and gestures are criminal offences, including as jokes or souvenirs.
  • Germany ↗Many city centres are low-emission zones: a car needs the right sticker (Umweltplakette) to enter.

Heligoland is a car-free sandstone island 40–60 km off the German coast, reached by boat from Cuxhaven, Büsum or Hamburg, or by small plane to Düne. Day visitors get roughly four hours ashore; one night buys the cliff path at sunset, the gannet colony at Lummenfelsen and a ferry-free morning on Düne. It is a duty-free zone, so tobacco, alcohol and spirits are cheaper than the mainland.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

No cars and no bicycles are allowed on either island (federal traffic code §50). Walk everywhere; the cliff-top and harbour are linked by stairs or a lift. Düne is reached by a small passenger boat from the main harbour.

See & do

Day-trips, door to door

Day-trips

Door-to-door, not ride time

Düne

go

Door to door: About 30 min

Small passenger boat from Heligoland harbour, about 10 min

Beach, clear water and often seals on the sand; the airport is here too.

Cuxhaven

skip

Door to door: 2–3 h each way

Day boat or catamaran from the mainland port

This is the mainland gateway, not a day trip from the island.

Büsum

skip

Door to door: 2–3 h each way

Day boat from the mainland port

Mainland departure point; no useful island-to-island service.

Sylt

skip

Door to door: A full day or more

No direct boat; back to the mainland, then train via Hamburg

Heligoland has almost no onward connections: most travellers return with the boat they came on.

Eat & sleep

Which area to sleep in

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Unterland (harbour level)

Hotels and guesthouses around the harbour and Südstrand; shortest walk from the boat.

Oberland (cliff top)

Quieter, up the lift or stairs; views over the island and sea.

Düne

Tent campsite only; the beach island, reached by small boat from Heligoland harbour.

Watch out

Safety

Very safe: no cars, no bicycles and a small resident population. The real risks are rough crossings, weather that closes boats and flights, and strong alcohol in the local Eiergrog.
  • Boats from the mainland give day visitors only about 4 hours ashore; the last sailing leaves in the afternoon.
  • If the island is fully booked there is no way to travel on once the ships have sailed: book a bed before you board.
  • Crossings can be rough; take seasickness precautions if you are prone.
  • Customs may check bags when you re-board: stay within duty-free limits or declare.
